Women at FITISM: Layla
The Juggle Continues
It’s crazy to see how much has changed since I last wrote about "fitting it all in",—yet so much has stayed the same. One thing that hasn’t changed? Life is busy—but I thrive on it!
The daily juggling act continues, as does my passion for training and competing—I can’t get enough of it! However, my focus has shifted. I may have finally put the marathon bug to bed after achieving my sub-3:30 time (though the thought of a sub-3:15 or 3:20 still lingers). That said, marathon training no longer excites me. But my love for running and training remains as strong as ever. I’ve absolutely loved cheerleading others too—pacing Martin for his sub-4 marathon and sub-1:50 half marathon were particularly special moments.
At the end of 2023, one of my clients, Emma Donnelly, entered us as a pair into HYROX—we placed 7th, and that was it. A new hobby unlocked!
Looking back, the transition from marathon running made perfect sense. HYROX fits my training style perfectly—run and lift. Most days, I train twice if the opportunity arises because I never know when I’ll get the chance again! This type of training is often called “hybrid training,” making me a “hybrid athlete”? (I have plenty to say on that subject, but I’ll save it for another time!)
A second-place podium finish at the start of 2025 in my second HYROX solo event was an unexpected high. For the record, I prefer doubles and spend much of my time convincing others to join me. If you spend any time with me, chances are you’ll be signed up for a run or competition before you know it!
My 5 a.m. wake-ups and split shifts have their perks—I get time in the middle of the day to train. Running remains my top priority, with strength training maintained through carefully planned double sessions.
My kids’ love of sports continues to grow, meaning weekends are packed with early morning football, rugby, and cricket matches. That just means an even earlier start for my own training—there’s no better feeling than ticking off a half marathon before breakfast!
Preparation is key. I love fresh, home-cooked food, but keeping it simple is essential. Bulk-prepping staple dishes in the slow cooker ensures there’s always a homemade meal waiting in the freezer for those crazy days.
One of my best ways to switch off? My horse. Being outside is my happy place, and being outside on my horse is even better. (For those of you who remember my grumbling about working in the cold during COVID, you might find this amusing!) One day, I’d love to compete again, but for now, my horse’s ongoing rehab means there’s no pressure—though I have a feeling this could be my post-HYROX focus.
I hope my love of training is catching. When coaching clients through the 6-Week Challenge, most women come to me with fat loss goals, and whilst improving body composition is important, it shouldn’t be the only measure of success. If you’ve been coached by me, you’ve likely heard this before!
Train because you understand the importance of movement.
Let mastering a press-up or pull-up bring you more joy than losing body fat.
See training as a lifestyle—something essential, not optional.
Train so you can chase your kids—and eventually your grandkids.
We were born to move, but it’s up to us to future-proof our bodies to retain that movement.
Reflecting on International Women's Day, I'm inspired by the incredible achievements of the women at FITISM. A standout moment was cheering on Emilie as she tackled her first HYROX event with just three weeks' notice—a fantastic start to 2025!
For many, simply stepping into the gym on day one is a monumental achievement. This initial step often leads to countless victories: pressing a bar overhead, pushing the prowler the length of the gym, conquering a box jump—the list is endless.
Our clients have cultivated a supportive, safe, and, most importantly, fun environment. Regardless of age, gender, ability, or goal, every win is celebrated by the entire gym. This genuine community spirit can't be manufactured; it grows organically, and for that, we are truly fortunate.
No matter how busy life gets, prioritising these three things will make all the difference.
